I BELIEVE IN MUSIC THE WAY SOME PEOPLE BELIEVE IN FAIRYTALES.”-AUGUST RUSH
If you are looking for a movie to make you feel every emotion possible, this is the, movie for you. Grab your popcorn, dark chocolate, and wine and curl up on the couch. I was introduced to this movie in high school in a class about families. You’ll understand why we watched the movie in that class in a second.
First of all, I want to start of by saying that, I’ve been on a Robin Williams movie binge lately because he was one of my favorite actors. Stayed giving us classics. This movie just shows you how he was able to portray characters with different personalities and characteristics.
So, the first scene helps set the mood of the movie, two people meet and it is love at first sight. Sounds cliché, but this movie is different. They are musicians who play instruments for two different genres. It’s classical meets rock. They have a drunken night and end up getting her pregnant. The crazy thing is that they didn’t realize that the would be they’re only night together. Lyla, one of the, main characters, did not find out that she was the mother until a bit late. An accident then causes her controlling father to make a decision that should not have involved him in the first place, but what does that matter. “Father knows best” This movie hops from present to past because it gives us different perspectives from each character in order to stir up emotions.
We then meet a little boy who may or may not be autistic, conspiracy theorists say that he is but I digress. He’s innocent and I love this music. This little boy happens to be the two musicians’ son, but he is now an orphan. August, which is not his real name, it is given to him by a wizard, always has this strange feeling that his parents are still alive and have been out looking for him. One day August finally gets up the courage to run away from his abusive foster parent and go out and look for his real parents.
Have you ever heard the quote “True love has a habit of coming back “? This movie kind of plays off that, not only romantically but when it comes to love with family. In your heart, you truly know where you are meant to be and that’s what is shown through the music. So, throughout the movie August gets this feeling every time he’s writing music: classical meets rock or mom meets dad. He went away and met up with a bunch of kids who are also runaways with talent and uses who plays for this low budget ex musician who said this is his way through life by using kids’ talent to make money. Considering his career did not work out. The wizard only wants the kids to make money for him, so he never lets them know that they’re good, so they don’t get any ideas.
August starts getting special treatment because he’s just musical genius at such a young age. He is a self-taught musician but little does he know it’s in his genes to play this well. His parents’ talents come together to create something special. Wizard starts giving August special treatment and other kids get jealous. One day the cops breaking to the theater with the kids happen to be staying and everyone must run and fend for themselves so they won’t get caught by the cops and take him back to the foster home. August hideaways in a church. Where he meets another musically talented kid (her instrument is her voice) and he hides out there. The little girl tells her pastor and the pastor get August and some college level music classes.
Once this happens, things begin to spiral and get tense, I don’t want to give away the climax or ending, but it gets good.
Many things are said throughout this movie that makes you think about how life works and things are not always how they seem. What is meant to be will be. This film was so interesting and good. Whoever watches this movie will not regret it.
