Looking Back at 2018: Lessons in Growth, Self-Reflection, and Knowing Your Worth

Hey loves, and welcome back to Joi’s Journey of Perception

We all wish we could go back and warn our past selves before the heartbreak, the mistakes, or the losses. While I don’t know everything, I have been through a lot and if sharing my lessons can help even one person grow, heal, or avoid unnecessary pain, then it’s worth it.

Think of this post as a heart-to-heart with your older sister or your closest friend. Today, we’re reflecting, learning, and growing together as we take a deep look back at 2018.

Why Looking Back Matters

Whew… what a year. If I had to describe 2018 in one word, it would be lessons. There were highs, lows, wins, and moments that tested my patience and self-worth. But I wouldn’t call it a bad year, just a very real one.

I truly believe reflection is necessary before closing a chapter. If you don’t understand the root of the problem, you can’t fix it or grow from it. So grab a pen and paper (yes, handwriting matters. It forces you to slow down and think deeply), and let’s reflect honestly.

Questions to Ask Yourself When Reflecting on the Year

What Were the Pros of This Year?

For me, the biggest wins were graduating and earning a promotion at work 🎓✨. I’m someone who sets short-term goals, and every time I accomplish one, it reminds me that progress is happening. Even when it feels slow.

What Were the Cons?

One of my biggest mistakes was letting people, especially men, back into my life because I believed they had changed. Spoiler alert: they hadn’t.

People can change, but only when they truly want to, not because you hope they will.

When Did I Feel Like Giving Up and Why?

I felt discouraged when the things I worked so hard for didn’t produce immediate results. 2018 forced me to confront my impatience. I wanted instant outcomes, instant validation, instant success.

Comparison made it worse. Watching others thrive made me question myself and my journey. If this sounds familiar, consider this your reminder: comparison will steal your joy every time.

Did I Say Yes When I Wanted to Say No?

Absolutely, especially at work. I often said yes to responsibilities that weren’t even part of my job description because I didn’t want to disappoint anyone.

Eventually, I realized something had to change: either I stop overextending myself or I demand growth and recognition. Learning to say no is an act of self-respect, not selfishness.

Did I Say No When I Wanted to Say Yes?

Yes and this one hurt. I said no to dating opportunities because I was afraid to move on after being hurt. Meanwhile, the person I was holding onto emotionally was living their life freely.

It took my grandmother reminding me that I’m young and deserve joy. One disappointment should never stop you from saying yes to new experiences.

Lessons I’m Taking Into 2019 (and Beyond)

As I reflect on who I was at the beginning of 2018 versus who I became by the end, these are the lessons I carry forward:

Cut your losses. You live, you learn, and you level up.

Don’t rush life. Growth takes time and that’s okay.

Stop trying to save toxic relationships. They block new blessings.

Protect your energy. Negative people drain your potential.

Know your worth. People only treat you how you allow them to.

Final Thoughts

Looking back isn’t about regret, it’s about clarity. Reflection allows you to move forward with wisdom instead of wounds. If 2018 taught me anything, it’s that growth is uncomfortable, but it’s always worth it.

Here’s to choosing ourselves, learning our lessons, and walking into the next chapter wiser, stronger, and more aligned 💖

If this resonated with you, feel free to share it or leave a comment, let’s grow together.
