Hey loves and welcome back to Joi’s Journey of Perception! Today’s topic is going to be different, but at the same time, it’ll be very interesting. During my younger years, I dreamed of appearing on America’s next top model. Nonetheless, I became more aware of the show’s toxicity as I got older. Unfortunately, there were so many issues with the show that it was hard to ignore them. The show is not even worth the entertainment that I gave. So in this blog post, I will be going over a few problematic moments on the show.
Anchal Joseph
On the show, Tyra and the judges tried to body shame this girl to the point where she started believing them. She is such a beautiful woman and they try to engrave in her head that her size was not gonna cut it if she wanted to be in the industry. It was just like the show’s job was to put down women in order to continue with the beauty standards of America. I guess that’s why they did that on America’s next top model.
Facing Trauma
Do you guys remember the episode where one of the girls’ friends had passed away and she was sort of forced to face her trauma the next day? They had to do a photoshoot where they were posing in graves. Why? I don’t know it’s a weird concept. But she was forced to post in the grave so the whole time all she could think about was her friend who had just lost her life.

Tooth Gap
At a young age, representation means everything. Until a lot of young girls were excited to see when I could contestants have a cap and be proud. What sucks about this is that the judges and Tyra made it seem like a gap was not the thing. So they tried to force one of the contestants to get her gap fixed in order to move on further in the show. This is weird because that still hunts the girl to this day. She just spoke about her experiences on the show and trust me it was not good.

Sexual Assult
I do not condone any type of sexual assault. I am 100% against it Apparently Tyra wasn’t. Cue the victim-blaming.

In The End
The list goes on with this toxic show. While there were a few things that you could learn when it comes to posing for a picture or walking down a runway it doesn’t make up for the trauma that it will leave you as a viewer and as a contestant. It is shameful that all the judges acted disrespectfully toward women and defended misogyny. We get enough from the real world why would you add to the trauma. Despite the fact that we learned about dangerous things from the show at a young age, we must remain mindful of the fact that we are all beautiful, and that beauty comes in a multitude of shapes and sizes, and colors. I hope you all like this post and I will see you in the next one!
