We’re often taught to trust doctors without question, and while most truly want to help, there are moments when something feels off. You explain your symptoms, your concerns, your pain… but instead of being heard, you’re met with rushed responses, vague advice, or worse…dismissal.
If you’ve ever left a doctor’s office feeling unheard, confused, or invalidated, know this: You’re not crazy. You’re not overreacting. And you absolutely deserve better.
Here’s what to do when your doctor isn’t listening. Because your health deserves attention, not assumptions.

💬 1. Trust Your Gut
If you feel like something is being missed, trust your intuition. You know your body better than anyone. If a doctor brushes off your pain or symptoms, don’t let their credentials override your inner knowing.
📝 2. Be Clear and Direct
Don’t be afraid to speak up clearly. Say:
- “I feel like you’re not hearing me right now.”
- “This has been affecting my daily life, and I need you to take it seriously.”
Sometimes we minimize our pain to be “polite”, but your voice matters more than their comfort.

📋 3. Bring Notes (and Backup)
Write down your symptoms, questions, and patterns before the appointment. If you’re feeling dismissed, having detailed notes (or even a friend or family member with you) can help you stay firm and focused.

📍 4. Ask for Specifics
Instead of just nodding along, ask:
- “Why do you think it’s not ____?”
- “What steps would we take if this gets worse?”
- “Can you explain why you’re recommending that approach?”
You deserve clarity, not medical gaslighting.

🔁 5. Get a Second Opinion (Without Guilt)
It’s okay, and sometimes necessary to see a different doctor. Advocate for yourself. You’re allowed to “break up” with a doctor who’s not taking you seriously. Your health journey should be collaborative, not dismissive.

👩🏽⚕️ 6. Find a Provider That Aligns With You
Look for doctors who respect your identity, your history, and your concerns. Whether it’s finding a provider that understands your race, gender, mental health, or chronic conditions, cultural competence matters.
Websites like Zocdoc, Healthgrades, and even Reddit forums can help you find providers with good reviews for listening and thoroughness.

💗 Final Thought:
Being dismissed in a medical setting is painful, and all too common, especially for women, Black women, neurodivergent folks, and anyone with “invisible” symptoms. You are not being dramatic. Instead you are being proactive.
You don’t owe anyone your silence. Advocate, speak, document, switch. Your life depends on it.
