We throw these two words around like they mean the same thing, but they don’t. Mixing them up is how you end up either settling for less than you deserve, or walking away from someone over something that was never actually a threat to the relationship. Let’s break down the difference so you can actually tell them apart.

What a Standard Is
A standard is something you expect and can reasonably ask for, and it can flex a little depending on the person and the situation without the relationship falling apart.
Examples of standards:
- Wanting consistent communication
- Expecting effort to be somewhat equal, not identical, just not one-sided
- Wanting to feel prioritized, even if it looks different week to week
- Expecting basic respect in how you’re spoken to
Standards can be communicated, worked on, and adjusted together. If someone falls short of a standard, it’s usually a conversation, not an automatic exit.

What a Dealbreaker Is
A dealbreaker is non-negotiable. It’s not about preference, it’s about compatibility or safety. If it’s crossed, the relationship doesn’t work, period, no amount of communication changes that.
Examples of dealbreakers:
- Dishonesty about big things (cheating, hiding a relationship status, lying about major life decisions)
- Disrespect that crosses into contempt or cruelty
- A fundamental mismatch on something unchangeable, like wanting kids or not
- Any form of abuse, physical, emotional, or otherwise
Dealbreakers aren’t up for negotiation, and they shouldn’t be softened just because you like the person.

4 Questions to Sort Which One You’re Dealing With
1. Is this something that can improve with communication, or is it fixed? If a conversation and some effort could genuinely change it, it’s more likely a standard. If it’s about who they fundamentally are or a line that’s already been crossed, it’s a dealbreaker.
2. Would I be okay if this happened again, as long as we talked about it? Standards can survive an honest conversation and a course correction. Dealbreakers don’t get better with a second chance, they just repeat.
3. Am I lowering this because I like them, or because it genuinely doesn’t matter that much to me? Be honest here. If you’re shrinking a standard down to nothing just to keep the peace, that’s not flexibility, that’s settling.
4. Does this affect trust and safety, or does it affect comfort and preference? Trust and safety issues are almost always dealbreakers. Comfort and preference issues are usually standards you can work through together.

Why This Distinction Actually Matters
If you treat every standard like a dealbreaker, you’ll walk away from people who were actually worth building something with. If you treat every dealbreaker like a standard, you’ll stay in situations that were never going to change, hoping enough patience will fix something that was never about patience in the first place.
Know your list. Know which items on it can bend, and which ones can’t. That clarity will save you a lot of confusion later.
