Fashion: What Bothers Me and Why?

Fashion is often seen as a fun and freeing form of expression. A way to show who we are without saying a word. And while that’s true, let’s be real for a second: fashion isn’t always empowering. Sometimes, it’s exhausting.

There’s a darker, more frustrating side to fashion that many of us don’t talk about enough. So let’s open that closet (pun intended) and unpack it. Here’s what really bothers me about fashion… and why.

Fashion: What Bothers Me and Why?

1. Unrealistic Beauty Standards

Let’s start with the elephant in the dressing room. Fashion runways, campaigns, and even everyday sizing seem to cater to one body type: thin, tall, and typically Eurocentric. That limited ideal makes so many people feel like they don’t “fit in” literally and emotionally.

It’s frustrating walking into a store and realizing your body wasn’t considered when the clothes were made. No one should feel excluded by fashion, but sadly, it still happens every day.

2. Fast Fashion Guilt

We all love a good deal, but what’s the real cost?

Fast fashion promotes overconsumption and often relies on unethical labor practices and harmful environmental impacts. Even when you want to shop sustainably, the higher prices can feel impossible to manage.

There’s guilt on both ends. For buying fast fashion and for not being able to afford the sustainable alternative. It’s a lose-lose cycle that makes fashion feel less fun and more like a moral dilemma.

3. Trends That Move Too Fast

Remember when trends lasted for years? Now, it feels like what’s “in” today will be out by next week. Thanks to TikTok and microtrends, you can buy a trendy piece and feel outdated in a month.

It’s exhausting and not realistic for people who want to build a thoughtful, lasting wardrobe. The pressure to keep up can drain your wallet and your confidence.

4. Judgment for Caring “Too Much” or “Too Little”

You ever get judged for being “too into fashion”? Or maybe for not caring enough?

Fashion can feel like a no-win situation. If you love styling outfits and dressing up, you’re “vain” or “trying too hard.” But if you keep it casual, people assume you don’t care about yourself.

The truth? How you dress is your choice. But society still likes to assign value based on appearance and that’s the problem.

5. The Lack of Authentic Representation

Representation in fashion has come a long way, but we’re still not there. It bothers me when diversity feels performative. When brands only showcase different races, sizes, or identities during specific months or campaigns.

Real inclusivity isn’t a marketing trend. It should be the norm in every season, collection, and fashion space.

Final Thoughts

Fashion has the power to uplift, express, and empower. But it also has room to grow. What bothers you about fashion may be the very thing that needs to change in the industry. Whether it’s the sizing, the pressure, or the lack of true inclusivity, it’s okay to feel frustrated.

Your relationship with fashion doesn’t have to be perfect. You’re allowed to question it, challenge it, and still enjoy it in your own way.
